Nikki Joins Conni across the Rainbow Bridge
My cocker spaniel Nikki passed away late Sunday night joining Conni the Yorkipom(Yorkshire Terrier/Pomeranian mix) who passed away 3 months ago.
Nikki was the sweetest and happiest dog that I've ever known. She was always happy and wagging her tail. The groomer told us that Cocker Spaniels were one of the hardest breeds to groom, but that Nikki was a pleasure to deal with. Conni came to live with us when Nikki was about 3 months old and had been with us for about a month. Conni was queen of the pack, and let Nikki know her place.
About 9 months ago, both dogs decided that their food sucked(I think it was a stale batch), and I spent a good deal of effort to find food they would eat. I started resuming their evening walk and on one Conni fell down and wouldn't get up, I carried her home and she was fine. She had two other similar incidents. A couple of weeks before she died, her abdomen began to swell, finally making it difficult for her to walk and we took her to the vet. difficult to walk, so it was time to get her checked out and the outlook was not good. Her vet said it was either a tumor or a heart condition(in hindsight, I think she may have had a couple of heart attacks). She passed away(with her vet's help) on Thursday, February 25th at about 4:30pm PST. Nikki had developed glaucoma and was pretty much blind in one eye. Finding food that she would eat was still an issue and she had become very thin and weak. We though we'd found some food that she liked the past few weeks but she ate her last meal Friday morning and developed digestive discomfort Saturday. Sunday night as she lay in her bed, that she loved, she took her last breath.
Conni came to live with us when Nikki(the cocker) was about 3 months old and had been with us for about a month. A friend of madame knew someone that couldn't keep her dog(this same friend provided half of our previous pack in a similar fashion) and we went over to pick up this black ball of fur named Blanco. We renamed her Conni(no 'e') since Blanco didn't seem fitting for a dog with black fur and no 'e' to match Nikki.
Nikki loved to eat and Conni must have not been in a multi dog household because she wanted to eat in a more leisurely fashion, not realizing that if she left food, Nikki would take care of it.
I used to walk my pack along the local main drag in the community we lived in in North Glendale, the comments I'd get about Conni from adults was "What kind of dog is that?" and from children "Toto!".
Conni hated trucks, motorcycles, and bicycles. If any of these would pass her, she'd start barking until they went away.
Nikki absolutely adored my wife and would sit and just stare at her. She tolerated me.
Conni would wander off sometimes...early one morning, I was still awake and noticed that Conni wasn't around. I looked everywhere for her: in the back of the house, out in the yard out front, and even outside the gate. It was about 3am and I'm calling for the little girl. I went out back for about the third time and heard the jingle of the bells on her collar. The landlord had folk doing work under the house and left the access open and Conni decided to explore. I put a Tile tracker on her collar after that.
Nikki loved to sleep in the big bed with dad and would get under the covers until she gets hot and then sticks her head out and finally sleeps on top of the covers. Conni saw it as party time, would wander around and eventually want to get down and go out(we'd already just gone out before bedtime). I'd lay there sleepless until I heard her come back in the doggie door. Then she'd want me to help her back into bed.
For next week or so after Conni died, I noticed I was still looking down to make sure I didn't step on her and for several days after Nikki's passing, I'd swear I'd see her in her bed out of the corner of my eye; but there were not there.
